HAVE A LOOK at NFPA 850:7.4 - prudent international utility practice is to sprinkle coal hopper feeder belts or fit water curtains where inclined conveyors enter the bunker feed area. There is a small but distinct risk of methane explosion in bunkers if water is applied to a bunker on fire. Carbon monoxide monitoring or explosive gas monitoring is useful. There have been a couple of serious fires in this type of kit in Germany in the last couple of years and one in the US. The Annex 7.4.1.1 of NFPA 850 has a lot of useful stuff on the hazards.

I am advising on five coal/lignite plants at the moment and tend to recommend a combination of linear detection/auto stop on belts, fire resistant belts, water spray or sprinklers on critical belts, cctv in transfer houses and on long inclined belts and water curtains where belts enter hopper feed galleries. Most international insurers are reluctant to provide cover at standard rates without this type of protection.(Indeed, most London market insurers now look for NFPA 850 compliance).

If anyone would like a copy of my Outline Specification for Power Generating Plant (usual disclaimers) send me an email offline to: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

NFPA 85 has a lot of verbiage concerning coal bunkers. But there's not a lot if any fixed fire protection involved. Prevention and suppression is mostly controlled by various procedures and operational methodology. Check it out.

Also might look at NFPA 120, FMDS 6-24(Coal Pulverizers and Pulverizing Systems), FMDS 6-2(Pulverized Coal-Fire Boilers).

Subject: Coal Bunkers

I have been asked if there are any guidelines for the sprinkler protection of coal bunkers?

Not sure of the background to this question, but would appreciate any feedback.
