Burton, 2006 IBC 903.4.2 "Where a fire alarm system is installed, actuation of the automatic sprinkler system shall actuate the building fire alarm system"
With that a) has a fire alarm system been installed ?, or is one required ? As Jim referenced (Section 907.2.7 in 2006 IBC) the occupant load criteria must be determined. Also is this strictly an M use or a mixed use ? Lastly assuming that a manual fire alarm system is required, did the owner take exception number 2 of 2006 IBC 907.2.7. and eliminate the manual stations in a fully sprinklered building ? So in a nutshell; 1) Fire Alarm installed, actuate the building fire alarm system. 2) Fire Alarm required, actuate the building fire alarm system if manual stations eliminated. 3) Check if any local amendments to adopted codes and standards in your area. Hope that helps John Drucker Fire Protection Subcode Official (AHJ) Red Bank, NJ -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 4:44 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: Alarms Burton, I've gotten into this discussion before with clients. IFC-2006 907.2 and related 907.2.7 require the alarm system only where total occupancy exceeds 500 or 100 person above or below exit discharge. If you go above and beyond you have to install per NFPA 72 and then ADA also have to be followed. It is not mandatory per ADA to provide visual appliances unless they are being provided for hearing abled - every has to be treated the same. If necessary, I may be able to dig up the ADA section. Given an outside alarm is provided. 1. Is the interior of the building required to have evacuation alarms? 2. Must they be throughout re 72 and ADA? Controlling codes are IBC and IFC land I know we've discussed this earlier but somebody maybe me needs convincing C.
