Add to that arbitrary doubling of hose stream allowances and fixed head
loss for backflow appliances by class - RP or non-RP - regardless of
actual performance of a specific make and model. And 8-sprinkler
residential design areas. We haven't ever done redundant pumps however,
except with aircraft hangars.

I think that Mark's original question was about building area increases
for sprinklers, which is a code formula thing, not necessarily a DOD or
UFC thing regarding tweaks to the sprinkler standards. To my knowledge
(and I've never been in the bathroom long enough to read the whole
thing) the UFC's (there are several) represent the Gubmint's
requirements for BASIS OF DESIGN, and are not a building code, so
there's nothing in there about height and area increases. Generally,
the project RFP will include a list of the referenced codes and
standards (including and especially the pertinent UFC's) and every
project we've done in the past three or four years, both plans/spec's
and design/build, have been based on the 2003 or 2006 IBC and IFC. The
only thing I'd want to double/triple check is that if you're doing a
residential project, the FPE branch will almost certainly override the
allowances for additional area and the extra story for a 13R system, and
require a 13 design regardless of what's in Chapter 5 of the referenced
edition of the building code.

UFC requires many other items to keep our tax dollars at work. Dual
tanks, dual pumps, cathodic protection and on and on. Go on line and
you can print it out but make sure you read it all.

The UFC requires a 3000 sf design area.
