When pl ans are drawn by a designer with a contrating firm, the firm retains
the copyright. If the designer is independent, it gets muddier. If the design
contract specifies that it is done as "work for hire", then the contractor has
the copyright. If that is not specified, then the person who did the design
retaons at least some rights. This goes somewhat against the adage that when
the contractor pays for the bill, he owns the plans.
Note: This is how I interpret the laws regarding intellectual property. I am
not a lawyer and have never passed a bar.

I don't know the legal reference, but I would assume the plans are the
intellectual property of the sprinkler contractor. Out our way architects
and engineers are getting really weird about sending out raw CAD file. When
they do give them out, the release we have to sign says the plans are the
intellectual property of they a/e firm. Why wouldn't it go both ways?

we develop?
Can a GC for future work give out your plans to all bidding contractors for
such future work?
How about the owner?
Talking about work you completed long ago and now they are doing TI work.
The design of a sprinkler system is a creative endeavor. None of us would
do the same building the same way. I know in some cases one can walk the
building and see all the same stuff. Probably nothing that protects those
issues.
It's a legal technical question if not exactly a sprinkler technical issue.
At least it's technical.
