The "equivalent length" reflects the loss due to change in direction, etc. The equivalent length approach is an extremely rough approximation of loss in fittings developed in the day when actually calculating the losses would have been extremely time consuming. For those who routinely report pressures to the tenth (or hundredth!) of a pound, the accuracy of the equivalent length method is on the order of pounds, not tenths.
