What Chris described is a non-combustible concealed space above a suspended
ceiling with limited combustible insulation. I would say that the
installation meets 8.15.1.2 and that 8.15.1.2.10 is not relevant to this
installation. 8.15.1 lists multiple possible installation scenarios.

8.15.1.2.10 is a different type of system that is not what you have. Typically
the rigid material is the white, blue or pink foam board. This stuff always
raises questions about combustibility as most everyone is familiar with foam
and how it reacts when exposed to heat and fire. In some cases the white
Styrofoam panels are used as insulation and that material will not meet the
criteria while the blue and pink most often does. So 8.15.1.2.10 addresses
these types of material.

The AHJ needs to read the rest of the section and understand it is addressing
various installations.

Subject: Limited combustible material above suspended ceilings

Hello,

Anyone had this issue with areas above suspended ceilings?

I have an "attic" composed of non-combustible and limited combustible

material. It is steel with noncombustible insulation and an insulation

barrier with a flame spread index of 10 on the exposed side (15 on the

insulation side) above suspended ceiling tiles with a class A fire rating

(flame spread of 25 or under).

The AHJ is telling me I need sprinklers in this area because the insulation

barrier is not ridged per NFPA 13/2007 8.15.1.2.10. I thought if it

conformed to 3.3.11 limited-combustible material definition it would not

need to be sprinklered per 8.15.1.2.1.

Thanks,

Chris Russell
