I see this stuff more than I like.  My guess is that someone did a room
design calc and sized it based on that.  I don't think that is what room
design was intended for :-(

I think it goes on a lot, with no consequences to the contractor
responsible.

which the  previous contractor was thrown off. A 6 story former hotel 
being converted  to a dormitory. In one area, there are 14 sprinklers 
fed off 3/4" CPVC.  I'm waiting to see to the plans and calcs. This is
