Tom, IBC 2006/903.3.1.2.1 Balconies & Decks. Note that this requirement is a subsection of 903.3.1.2 NFPA 13R sprinkler systems, so that it only applies to 13R buildings. It reads a little goofy so read it carefully. When you say to yourself, "But there's no dry head listed for 14" below anything," you'll be right. Now move on. I think it's because there have been several fires from unattended barbecues lighting up the deck above and then having the fire follow the cantilever into the floor/ceiling structure. That explains worrying about patios. I think it's in IBC instead of 13R because it was proposed by fire chief associations who got it into IBC but not NFPA. That though, is speculation.
