For a similar 13D situation (large house, with a 2000 sq.ft. mechanical
room), I used Q/R heads in the mech. room. The EOR specified 13D. I advised
13R but by that time the 2" underground was already installed. A sprinkler
system was not required by code and the EOR insisted 13D. However, I
designed for four heads.

Subject: 13D in large res mech space

I am working on a large single family house with a mechanical room that is
564 sqft. The ceiling is open to the wood trusses and there are lots of
ducts and wiring in the space. No smooth ceiling and residential pendent
sprinklers cannot be installed with their listing or Code. There are
probably going to be 5 or 6 sprinklers in the room. My thought was to use QR
uprights because nothing else will work. Does this make sense? What would be
the appropriate design criteria? The water supply is a 13D pump and tank.

This is a partial system that is not required by Code and the AHJ could care
less what goes on. He doesn't even want to see the plans.
