The AHJ's enforce the code section, that doesn't mean we like or agree with it. Personally I prefer 2-1/2 NH. Why because just about everyone's got it (yep it's the same hose used for handlines), it's easy to handle (as a driver/operator I've been the one to make the connection and a John J pointed out you have two lines supplying the FDC (could be serving a standpipe right) so there's some redundancy (yes even if we lose hydrant water we still have something in the booster tank if only for mere minutes).
