Roland,

Perhaps it's the term AHJ ?. Typically the plan reviewers and/or inspectors
merely enforce the code, i.e. verify compliance. Contrary to popular belief
we aren't the decision makers. That's right comply with code get approved.
The decision makers are owners, architects, engineers, designers. As you
know buildings can be built of metal or wood, sprinklered and not
sprinklered. Of course there are times when we are empowered and called upon
to make a determination, sort of like in "a few good men"....show me in the
field manual where the mess hall is located". No matter how we try it's
impossible to right all this stuff down, to contemplate each scenario.

The IBC Thread provisions (901.4) state "shall be compatible with the
connections used by the fire department". In this context the Fire
Department is the decision maker. If the FD chooses Storz that's their
decision. Incidentally take a look at the 2006 IBC 901.4 Commentary, Storz
fittings are discussed. Code officials are bound to enforce that code
section in accordance with the fire departments decision, i.e. "5 Storz is
our connection". I agree a national standard would be ideal but again it's
the fire departments call.

A saying comes to mind........."Don't shoot the messenger, change the code
!"

PS, Japanese and now Greek Mythology where else but the sprinkler forum can
one be immersed in such culture.

If it isn't the AHJ Requiring them then what is the basis for so many
being installed when none are listed? We all know the music we are
suppose to sing but this one is a song by itself (as far of extent of
use)

Never said EVERY AHJ likes them but that's no cause for throwing
profanity like the C word around - lol
