Be cautious in quickly deciding to omit sprinklers in these types of rooms.
While there may be allowances permitted by code to omit the sprinklers there needs to be some analysis and discussion with the owner on just what impact a fire within one of these spaces can have on their operation. Loss of communications whether by phone, data or other means can be devastating to a company. The extent of loss within these rooms in a fire is almost always 100%. Electronic equipment is temperature sensitive so even if it was not directly burned, the elevated temperature can destroy it. Not to mention the repair of cabling within and to a point beyond the room. Having discussions with clients whose original fear was the equipment getting wet and who have had total losses due to even small fires within the rooms, their follow-up choice was to provide sprinklers. Remember that even if the equipment did get wet accidentally, it can be dried out, and restored to service a lot faster than it can had it been exposed to a fire. And also don't forget that these rooms end up being storage closets for miscellaneous junk sooner or later. We should make sure the choices made are in the overall best interest of the clients we serve. Craig L.
