8.6.6.1 sets the 18" from top of storage to deflector, but the handbook FAQ "Do the requirements of 8.6.6.1 apply to shelving against the wall? "Sprinklers installed near wall mounted shelves or piled storage located against a wall are not intended to be governed by the requirements of 8.6.6.1"

Are they Obstructions? Not an obstruction because you are not trying to throw over it. I wouldn't get torn up about 24" deep with 0"-17" clear above for the same reasoning. But I agree at some point perhaps a little judgment is in order? So what about a 7' deep shelf unit all the way to the ceiling (or a couple inches from the ceiling) and heads 7'6" off the wall. A 12" shelf in an office is probably LH. 7' deep and it's probably OH at least. Let assume the density is right what ever it is. That one I don't have as clear an answer. Can't think of a code reason it's wrong but it feels wrong. Short of some code section I'd have to go along with it. Chris Cahill, P.E. Are they Obstructions? Forum members, I've drilled the 18" clearance issue into a building owners head and know he's got me scratching my head with a situation at his facility. He has a bookcase against a wall that is 12" deep with a clear space of about 6" above between the ceiling and the top of the bookcase. The sprinkler is 6" out in front of the bookcase. He's asking me why the bookcase is not an obstruction. It's Friday after a long week and I'm not sure why the book case is not an obstruction. What if the geometry was different? Let's say a cabinet that 24" deep and had 17" clearance between top of cabinet and ceiling? If you could point me to the right code sections, I would appreciate it. I have looked at supplement 7 in the residential handbook but this is an office building with standard spray sprinklers.
