Randy, Thom and Chris are all over this one. just check out the annex material that the Committee provides to indicate the intent here. "A.8.6.6 The 18 in. dimension is not intended to limit the height of shelving on a wall or shelving against a wall in accordance with 8.6.6. Where shelving is installed on a wall and is not directly below sprinklers, the shelves, including storage thereon, can extend above the level of a plane located 18 in. (457 mm) below ceiling sprinkler deflectors. Shelving, and any storage thereon, directly below the sprinklers cannot extend above a plane located 18 in. below the ceiling sprinkler deflectors."
So ease up... and stop screamin' at the owner so much. :) Besides it's Friday man! It should be recognized that the above is my opinion as a member of the NFPA 13 Committee on Installation Criteria representing the NFSA, and has not been processed as a formal interpretation in accordance with the NFPA Regulations Governing Committee Projects and should therefore not be considered, nor relied upon, as the official position of the NFSA nor the NFPA, nor any of their technical committees.
