Similar to the difference in diligence (or attitude) in running drain tests.
You're SUPPOSED to (good practice) hang the drain test results at the valve
for comparison, and advise when results are different. How many penny loafer
inspectors run the drain test, write down the results, and then go to the
next one without comparing results? Maybe I should say running shoe
inspectors for the amount of time and attn paid to the RESULTS of the ITM,
no sense in running drain test if you don't compare the results.

Subject: Re: Fire Pump Test Results

NFPA 25, Section 8.3.5 does not require comparison over a 4 year period but
does require comparison to the original acceptance test (which should match
the factory curve) and/or name plate data.  If the pressure at rated flow is
less than 95% of the acceptance test or nameplate data, an investigation
into cause is warranted.

I have clients who ask me to review the pump test results.  Sometimes the
contractor offers an opinion on performance and sometimes not.  25 does not
explicitly require the contractor to do the analysis.  If you run the test
and see a degradation in performance of 5% or more, it would be prudent to
notify the owner that there may be maintenance issues that need
investigation.

Does anyone know if it is a NFPA or code requirement to compare the test
results of fire pumps over a four year period?  I've been using a spread
sheet to compare the current test with the original acceptance test
(rarely available) and with previous tests.  I'm finding what may be
concerns and I would like to provide a code reference to the owner.

Thank you!
