Thanks Jim and Scot,

KY pipe is actually what we are going to use. I am learning it now and we
have a couple of experienced users to help me through the process. It's
good to hear that it's reliable software. You always wonder how much
validation has been done with physical testing for modeling programs like
this. It seems like KY Pipe is the industry standard.

Thanks again and have a great week,

Steve,

I have used the KY-Pipe Surge program to conduct surge pressure transit
analysis for a large loss in order to defend the sprinkler contractor in US
Federal Court. This is the only surge program that has had significant peer
review and realistically models the pressure wave effects including the
additional pressure that results from the pressure wave crossing itself. It
can also model pressure surge chambers to determine the effects that a curge
chamber has on the system. If you are using the KY Pipe hydraulic program it
is easy to import, however it is not a problem with building a model from
scratch. Read the software manual because you will need to know opening
times for check valves, OS&Y valves and all related valves.

Subject: Surge Calculations

Has anyone ever had to perform a surge analysis to determine the
water-hammer forces on piping for the purpose of designing pipe restraints
for a fire protection system supplied by a pump. We are being asked to
provide this and the software KY Pipe was recommended. I'm used to just
using NFPA 24 for this. It's a big underground system at an overseas
manufacturing facility.

Any insights or recommendations on modeling software would be greatly
appreciated.

Thanks and Happy New Years!
