I have only heard that this works, but have never tried it or known anyone
that tried it, so it's really just a rumor.

Pressurize a freezer dry system with the environmentally friendly
refrigerant, turn off the light and using a black light, the leaks
fluoresce.

I'm sure this is also available as some form of leak detector without the
fluorocarbons.

ON a related note, more of this activity should be occurring since the  
2008 ed. of 25 finally required dry-pipe systems to be checked for air  
leaks.  Before that, as long as the compressor could keep up (running  
non-stop), it must have been ok.
