Cal valve e-581 is field repairable. This valve has a very small seat area,
and any dirt or sand on the seat can cause it to leak. It must also use the
resilient seat not the metal to metal seat.

Flushing the seat may clear it, without opening up the valve.

Subject: Cla-Val # 581

During an inspection, my tech found the FDC was full of water and was broken
at the top. The FDC is a 90° Siamese double clapper rising out of the
ground. We are assuming the check valve is leaking. The check valve is a
Cla-Val # 581. Is this valve repairable or should it be replaced? The
building is only 4 years old. What is the normal life of a valve like this?
