Thanks; we had looked at this. However, UFC 3-600-01 says to use the area/density method for hydraulic calcs, which is a different paragraph from the room design method so I interpret that to mean it's not allowed for military work. We need to talk to the AHJ, of course.

The mechanical room that is separated from the rest of the building by non-rated, but smoke-resistant, walls. I'm thinking it would be reasonable to use all 700 sf of the mech room but reduce the other 2300 sf by 40%, making 700 + (0.6)(2300) = 2080 sf. Since only the mech room ceiling is sloped it doesn't make sense to apply an increase to the entire area. I know I have to use the higher hose stream and duration per 11.1.5.2 because my higher density area is over 400 sf. Eric J.
