Kudos to Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake for signing into law a
new home residential fire sprinkler ordinance.

And congratulations to the elected Aldermen who decided their case
after reading, hearing and listening to presentations and reports from Fire
Marshal Raymond O'Brocki and Maryland Flat Fire Marshal William Barnard.

With residential fire sprinklers in the NFPA in their Life Safety Code
101, Building Code 5,000, and National Fire Code 1 for two code cycles, and the
ICC in its 2009 and now 2012 International Residential Code (IRC), also having
incorporated residential fire sprinkler requirements for new single-family
homes, you would think it would not take much of a stamp of courage to adopt
for your town. But it is, as the National Association of Realtors and the
National Homebuilders Association fight these requirements at the State and
Local level, putting extreme political pressure and misinformation to State
Legislature, Local, City and Village Councils.

One only has to look at one of Illinois' largest cities, Naperville,
and its nearby neighbor, St. Charles, to see what ignorance and misinformation
can be translated into a rejection of the Fire Chief's recommendation and a
victory for businesses who build homes. The people are the losers, the
firefighters are the losers, as the builder moves on with their profit, and the
citizens and the firefighters have to contend with unchecked and uncontrolled
fire that turns into the deadly flashover.

Congrats to Baltimore, Home of the National Anthem, by defeating
ignorance, false propaganda and supporting your Fire Chief and firefighters!
