You'd think the Fire Marshal would have explained he'd take the tradeoff of less fire/more water damage any day, and gone on about 20 GPM vrs 250 GPM but- he didn't. And the first guy to testify for the homebuilders in at the PA Hearings was a builder/fire chief, the one pointing out that if you had residential sprinklers and your house caught fire, you'd have 700 gallons of water in your basement. See- tat's terrible. Until you realize your alternative is watching your house burn down. We're doing a new, wood truss roofed fire company here in Central PA. Originally had a 15,000 gal tank, pump, and full wet and dry protection throughout. Now- after their variance was accepted- it has a 13D tank and pump and not even a dozen heads to protect the bunkroom. See, if the building catches fire, they can run out of the sprinklered bunk room into the burning building where they'll get in the fire truck, pull it out of the building, stop, and pull the hoses off and put the fire out. See how easy it is to provide Equivalency? Since they are firefighters, we can have them run thru the flaming building on the way to get their turnout gear on since they're trained. Not sure what training does to protect your body from flame on way to get turnout gear, but - they're trained and its been deemed Equivalent protection to a full 13 system throughout.
