Hello Herb,
NFPA 13D defines a multipurpose sprinkler system as serving both domestic and
fire protection needs in Section 3.3.9.3. Further, Section 6.3.3.1, states
"Piping connected to the system that supplies only plumbing fixtures shall
comply with local plumbing and health authority requirements but is not
required to be listed."

I would also point out that in most cases, the vast majority of Uponor PEX-a
tubing that is used in the multipurpose systems is in fact UL1821 listed,
including the piping supplying the plumbing fixtures.

Please feel free to contact me directly if you would like to discuss more fully.

Subject: RE: 13D Multipurpose Inspection

Mike
It's been a while since we've talked. I have come across some interesting
stuff lately regarding multipurpose systems and wanted to run it by you.

I have plumbers and the mfg rep from Uponor telling me that it is perfectly
legal and acceptable to install a normal domestic plumbing system using non
listed PEX pipe and non UL listed (1821) fittings and tie it into the
sprinkler heads. They say the way they read the code (they haven't been
able to identify the code number yet) as long as the fitting with the
sprinkler is listed, the 'T' off the plumbing system is listed, and the PEX
in between is listed they are legal and conforming to code. This seems
wrong to me. It defeats the purpose of requiring the fire sprinkler system
to be composed of UL 1821 listed components if 95% of the pipe and fittings
between the incoming water and the sprinkler system is not listed for fire.
