Okay, just got off the phone w/ Tyco support and thought I would post here. The keywords are "ceiling construction" in Tyco's listing #2 - ceiling construction pertaining to features of a ceiling itself and not the trusses above a ceiling. Trusses are only mentioned in UL listing #3 with strict criteria such as noncombustible web members. They pointed out to me the previous provision that it needs to be per Nfpa 13 and we went over each point of 8.4.3. and open web trusses (consisting of 2x construction) fails to meet 8.4.3. (1) for "smooth" ceilings / roof and also 8.4.3. (3) web members no greater than 1".
Hope that clarifies for anyone else who's come across this. --- On Mon, 3/14/11, Matt Grise <[email protected]> wrote: From: Matt Grise <[email protected]> Subject: RE: EC Upright in Attic Space To: "'[email protected]'" <[email protected]> Date: Monday, March 14, 2011, 9:17 PM 2007 8.4.3 (2) Unobstructed or noncombustible obstructed where specifically listed for such use. If they do not meet the spacing requirements, then they are improperly applied, but they could be there from a code standpoint. I couldn't space it 4x without being too close to one side of the truss or the other.... --- On Mon, 3/14/11, Matt Grise <[email protected]> wrote: From: Matt Grise <[email protected]> Subject: RE: EC Upright in Attic Space To: "'[email protected]'" <[email protected]> Date: Monday, March 14, 2011, 8:56 PM I think it says that if you have members greater than 1", you must apply the 4times rule. Looking at 8.4.3. (2007 ed) I don't think this is permissible mainly because of the "smooth, flat" criteria. Am I right? And does someone make an EC upright that can possibly be used in this scenario (besides the Tyco attic sprinklers).
