Not questioning, just curious. On the issue of 25 year life span, got a code
on that? If it's UFC 3-701 most years are well more than 25.

On the issue of sch 40 falling short of the life span, got a code on that? I'm
aware of 4-2.3.2 but that only limits sch 10 piping without a direct limit.
"To determine if sch 10 can be used". Fine it can't depending on what the
limit is. I also find it humorous sch 7 or 5 doesn't seem to be limited or even
require testing.

Subject: RE: UFC 6-11.4

6-11.1 has several places where things can go wrong if your scope includes
only the phrase "design in accordance with UFC 3-600-01".

1. Failure to RFI the need to design for Group A plastics or other
commodities such as liquids. Note the "unless a more severe class of
storage is anticipated" phrase in 6-11.1.
2. Sprinklering of all the loading docks vs sprinklering of exterior
canopies.
3. Designing for maximum potential height of storage.
4. Failure to RFI the type of storage arrangement (rack, solid pile, etc,
solid shelf and all those things).
5. Failure to RFI the preference for in-racks vs overhead only. Sometimes
your least expensive approach is not what the owner wants.
6. Failure to RFI the need for interior hose connections.
7. Provision of doors at all riser locations.
8. Column protection either by fireproofing or sprinklers - the fireproofing
option is not easy to identify on drawings.
9. Adequate sectional valves provided by the site civil engineer.
10. If the secondary fire pump is required I'd suggest clarifying the
acceptable drive type.

Finally, most design/build jobs have a defined useful lifespan for building
systems (25 years). I've started to insert this into the specifications,
intending to force MIC testing and provide results demonstrating the
anticipated piping lifespan. If you are planning for schedule 40 and your
MIC testing shows 22 years, then this should be clarified prior to bidding.

However, my reading of 6-11.4 has not uncovered hidden meanings. Using the
three bullet points it would be possible to have 120,000 sq ft open area. I
do think the 10% ESFR increase would mean rounding up instead of down when
determining the number of heads calculated.

Can anyone shed any light on the meaning of this section in the UFC? Bill?
Anyone?

I have used a single 2½" female hose x male thread adapter, about a foot off
the floor. Then you use a short piece of 2½" fire hose for testing.

Tom,

Do you have a picture or a sketch of a drain riser and connections for a
2-1/2" pressure reducing hose valve? I'm having a hard time picturing how
this all goes together. Also any hints on distance or arrangement would be
helpful. Thanks
