In other words, a light hazard occupancy with two different areas of
coverage depending on the type of head? Sounds like the engineer is
concerned about the response time of the concealed heads vs the recessed.
Maybe he/she attended a recent performance design seminar and doesn't
realize we are dealing with rules and not engineering design. Are the
concealed installed at a higher elevation than the recessed? NFPA 72
adjusts detector spacing for ceiling height, but so far NFPA 13 does not
build this in. Are you in charge of selecting the sprinkler type?

Subject: Concealed Sprinklers Limited to Ordinary Hazard Spacing

This may have been covered in the past, but I did not see any mention of it.

Recently we have seen contract specifications requiring that concealed
sprinklers be spaced for ordinary hazard requirements, while allowing
recessed sprinklers to be spaced for light hazard requirements in the same
space. Does anyone know where this requirement may be coming from? Want to
make sure I didn't something.
