Matt,

Thank you and I agree. That’s why I was asking - they had the key words
leading to retail storage but they specifically call out the sprinklers and
the Table for Misc Storage in their specs.

It sounds like they are looking for the retail requirements - especially
since they use the term 'gondola racks'. Also, Misc storage is limited to
4000 sf and is supposed to be 'incidental to another occupancy use'. Also,
if you go with the standard storage criteria for racks with solid shelves,
you will have in-rack sprinklers.

Subject: Retail Store Design

I am working on system design for a major retail chain for office products;
Top of steel is 19'-0 high, exposed structure - their specs call for
standard response brass upright 286° sprinklers and say the following:

A. "All fire protection systems for the entire retail sales and receiving
areas shall meet the requirements for storage of commodities in single row
and double row racks as well as solid shelf gondola racks which have an
overall width greater than 30 inches and for storage of commodities to a
maximum height of 12'-0 AFF." And then refers to NFPA 13 2002 Table
12.1.10.1.1. (which is Misc Storage up to 12' in height).

E. " The sprinkler system for the entire retail sales and receiving areas
shall be designed in accordance with NFPA 13 requirements for gondola
storage greater than 30 inches in overall width, which are treated as racks
with solid shelving, in addition to single and double row rack storage of
Class I-IV non-encapsulated commodities to an overall height of 12'-0 AFF.

According to their specs, it appears they are applying NFPA 13 -2002 Misc
storage 12.1.10 (Chapter 13 in NFPA 2007). My question is - When do you
apply NFPA 13 2002 - 12.7.2 (NFPA 13 2007 - 20.3)? Would the scenario above
apply to these chapters or would it be Misc Storage?

Thank you,
