That certainly does simplify things, like the 3x and 4x rules- compared to
memorizing the beam rule for various distances and sprinkler types.
KISS, same concept FM applied to new DS.

Subject: RE: NFPA 13(07) vs 13R(07)

Ron,
I found this from an old NFSA post.
"For NFPA 13D and NFPA 13R, the rules are much simpler and are based on a
research program conducted by the NFSA in residential occupancies. The NFSA
research program consisted of computer fire modeling, water distribution tests,
sprinkler response tests and full-scale fire tests both with still fans and
with fans running. After reviewing all of the data, the committee responsible
for NFPA 13D and NFPA 13R wrote the following simple rules:
* For pendent sprinklers, keep the sprinkler at least 3 ft from the
center of the fan (not the near edge).
* For sidewall sprinklers, keep the sprinkler at least 5 ft from the
center of the fan (not the near edge)."

I was hoping foe an answer to this myself. I'm guessing it's just an anomaly
between two different committees but your guess might also be right.
