Had a jurisdiction in Virginia that made us sprinkler these. Required us to
install a dry system in a building used as a daycare center. This is a
situation that a meeting with the code official/plan reviewer may be
beneficial.

Subject: Mansards - NFPA 13

Is there anything in NFPA that allows omission of sprinklers in combustible
mansards or similar features built on the outside of a building? I have a
project in which these decorative features are being built on the roof to
hide mechanicals and at the top floor along the outside wall to give a
"castle tower" effect. No mechanicals inside, just dead space separated
from the main building by either a wall or a roof. I have told the GC to
fill them with non-combustible insulation but there is a cornice that that
is 2ftx2ft (actually ½ because it looks like a triangle) that will be framed
with 2X6 16in OC that will look like a ledge for the windows. He is asking
if it also needs insulation. My gut feeling is no because it is such a
small area.

Thanks,
