Typical Waste Water Treatment Plants are classified as F-2 occupancies and
don't require fire protection. SO2 is of no consequence as it's not a
flammable gas. Unless quantities of it create a change in occupancy
classification where the room ends up an "H" occupancy, there just usually is
no driver within the plant to warrant fixed fire protection.

Subject: SO2 chemical

The city is asking if sprinkler coverage is needed at the sewage treatment
plant. Of particular concern is a room (8 x 12) where the chlorine in the
sewage is treated with SO2 (sulfur dioxide) so the discharge is rendered safe
to be put into the river. The building construction is a combination of wood
and brick. I do not know any dimensions of the entire building or other rooms.
At present, there is a sprinkler head in the SO2 room, plumbed off the potable
water supply. No shut off valves, no gauges, no drains.

My initial response is if a sprinkler system is needed, it would be addressed
by the city’s insurance carrier.

Anyone familiar with a sprinkler in treatment plants?
