Quite possible that they were using 'Rules for Automatic Sprinkler
Installations - Issued by the Fire Offices' Committe' 29th edition. This
would have been widely used in Europe until 1990 when BS 5306 Part 1 took
it's place (BS 5306 was then replaced with EN 12845).

I don't have a copy of the 29th edition. I have a copy of the 28th edition
(October 1960 - reprinted November 1968 incorporating Amendments No.1 to
14).

The concept in the 28th edition as well as BS 5306 1990 are a little bit
more than a straight table. I have taken some photos of the relevant pages
(Section 16) from the 28th edition and emailed those to you (so keep an eye
on your junk folder). I'm not sure if there was any changes between the
28th edition and the 29th in this regards. However you could check if it
jives with what you're looking at.
