Exactly. You have a furnace. Which means it's accessible. If it's accessible, it can likely be used for storage. If there's a gas fired appliance in a space that's accessible and could be used for storage, I don't think $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ or convenience are good reasons to not sprinkler the space.
