Echoing what the others have said, based on my own experience in the fireworks industry, I'd suggest you get quite familiar with the parameters of the "Orange Book", which is the BATFE regulations, commonly referred to as Code 555. Fireworks, consumer or commercial, are classed as "explosives", and the regulations for their storage are very detailed, and quite extensive.

And, it would be significant to identify what UN classification applies to what is being stored 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 or something else. Consumer fireworks would most likely be 1.4, however that's just a guess. It should be marked, clearly, on the boxes.

And, not to split too many hairs, my first thought when I read the original post was "hey, for 95,000 square feet, it's at least two systems, and perhaps three, based on the maximum square footage limitations of NFPA 13, 8.2.1"

good luck!

Someone has a lot of work to do. Storage of this type of material goes far
beyond just what kind of sprinkler system is in the building. You are getting
into significant building construction issues as the area you describe is most
likely going to end up being an H-3 Hazardous occupancy if it's just consumer
level fireworks. [Table 307.1(1) IBC]

You definitely need to hire someone with Special Hazards Analysis experience not just
some average commercial architect/engineer as once you venture into the world of special
hazards there are a lot of things to analyze and investigate and coordinate between
disciplines. "H" occupancies touch all disciplines to some extent not just
fire protection.

Also be looking at Section 307 of the Building code, Chapter 56 of the Fire
Code along with NFPA 495 to get started. As you evaluate and substantiate the
exact building occupancy category you will be led to other chapters or codes.

First step would be to contact the local fire authority because some
authorities may not even allow such a venue within their jurisdiction based on
local building restrictions. If they can't occupy the building all other
investigations are moot.

Also see the info at the link provided, it appears that NFPA has withdrawn 1142
due to some challenges to their procedures and such.

Subject: Fireworks Storage

A customer has asked us to survey an existing sprinkler system in a 95,000
square foot building to see if it is adequate for storage of consumer fireworks
and alter the system accordingly. I don't see a single mention of the word
fireworks in NFPA 13 and NFPA 1124 the Code for the Manufacture,
Transportation, Storage, and Retail Sales of Fireworks and Pyrotechnic Articles
leaves me with the impression that it is impossible to protect a building
with a water-based fire protection system that stores this type of product.

We plan to involve an architect as well as the AHJ before moving forward.

Does anyone have any experience with a similar situation?

Thanks.
