Thanks for the clarifications. It's still "relatively recent" :-) I
feel like such an old timer.
I was shocked when I saw the plans though for a project designed last
year with a gridded dry system..and reviewed/approved by a NICET
IV...and approved by a local official..and installed by the
contractor...and passed inspection that way. Some cracks still happen.

Travis,
The 1985 edition of NFPA 13 permitted gridded dry systems as follows:

(1893-L) system capacity for gridded systems or not more
than 750-gal (2839-L) system capacity for nongridded
systems shall be controlled by one dry-pipe valve.

branches of the system to assist in more rapidly reducing
the air pressure above the valve seat to the dry-pipe valve
trip point, systems may exceed the above volume limitations,
but no system branch shall have a capacity exceeding

branch plus common pipe exceed 500 gal (1893 L) for

in the clapper of each check valve to permit equalization of
air pressure among the various parts of the system. An
approved indicating drain valve, connected by a bypass
around each check valve, shall be provided as a means for
draining the system. All check valves shall be located in
heated enclosures to prevent the formation of ice.
The 1987 edition of NFPA 13 stated the following:
5-2.3* Size of Systems.
I 5-2.3.1 Volume Limitations. Not more than 750-gal
(2839 L) system capacity shall be controlled by one dry pipe

The gridded dry pipe system was not permitted since the 1987 edition of NFPA 13.

Subject: Re: Gridded dry system
As far as I know, it was sometime in the 70's or earlier where it was no longer
permitted. I ran into one that was installed last year as a gridded dry
system. No one caught it and it is sitting there today.
Things slip through the cracks.

All,
I have come upon a gridded dry system fed by a fire pump that was installed in
1985.
I was sure that these are not legal, but could they have been in 1985 ?
Any help would be appreciated,
