NFPA 20 2013: 4.13.2.1 Sections of steel piping shall be joined by means
of screwed, flanged mechanical grooved joints or other approved fittings.
NFPA 24 2013 10.3.3 Groove Joining Methods. Pipes joined with grooved
fittings shall be joined by a listed combination of fittings, gaskets, and
grooves.

I looked all the way back to NFPA 20 1990 and found a similar wording. If
anything, I'd say the OS&Y is typically flanged as its the most common
configuration to get the valve in, and its typically bolted directly to a
flanged increaser? I think this is mostly a "how we've always done it"
situation.

I might be going crazy but I thought there was a requirement for something
in the fire pump suction line to have flanged fittings... perhaps the
OS&Y? I can't find anything like that now that I"m looking for it and I do
see a general requirement that the fittings can be screwed, flanged or
mechanically grooved. Is there such a requirement or was there ever one
for flanged fittings?
