CORRECT, no reduction for QA here. Instead, please make check for sales tax on
larger pipe size payable to Franchise Tax Board, Sacramento CA.

1 large universal parking area 40'x80', garage is separated from residential
portion by a 1 hour rated wall. (Not a separate building just a 1 hour wall)
Sounds like OH1 it is and thanks to the great state of California no area
reduction for me. :)

Thanks Steve

First, since carports aren't addressed in 13R, I think you have to call it a
"garage". Next, is this one universal parking area or is it compartmentalized
into spaces less than 500 sq. ft. (NFPA 13R, 7.2.3.1 and 7.2.4.1)? Then, are
the walls separating it from other compartments rated? 30 minutes? One-hour?
Or, is there a building separation that would trigger full NFPA 13 (7.3.1)?
Assuming a larger compartment, it'll probably boil down to OH1 per NFPA 13 with
area reduction allowed for QR sprinklers.

Subject: 13R systems

I have a 3 story apartment building, 1st floor has 4 units and a parking area.
2nd and 3rd floors each have 6 units. The Parking area is on the far end of the
building under 2 of the 2nd floor units. The parking area has a 1 hr rated wall
and door that leads to the 4 units on the 1st floor. In my opinion this isn't
really a garage because it's completely open on one side, I look at it more as
a carport (please correct me if im wrong)...... I believe I should be using
section 7.2.2 (13R 2013) where it states " the design discharge and design
area criteria for area protected by quick response sprinklers shall comply with
NFPA 13." I'm unsure if this is directing me to calc at OH1 .15/1500 because
its automobile parking or if it saying to calc at a .10 over 4 sprinklers per
NFPA 13 11.3 ( not sure this section even applies because 13R 6.4.7 doesn't say
carports fall under the category where residential sprinklers can be used
outside dwelling units. I design maybe 2 residential projects every year so I'm
not as in tune with residential standards as I should be. Any guidance is much
appreciated.

Thank you!
