I have a 3 story apartment building, 1st floor has 4 units and a parking
area. 2nd and 3rd floors each have 6 units. The Parking area is on the far
end of the building under 2 of the 2nd floor units. The parking area has a 1
hr rated wall and door that leads to the 4 units on the 1st floor. In my
opinion this isn't really a garage because it's completely open on one side,
I look at it more as a carport (please correct me if im wrong).. I believe I
should be using section 7.2.2 (13R 2013) where it states " the design
discharge and design area criteria for area protected by quick response
sprinklers shall comply with NFPA 13." I'm unsure if this is directing me
to calc at OH1 .15/1500 because its automobile parking or if it saying to
calc at a .10 over 4 sprinklers per NFPA 13 11.3 ( not sure this section
even applies because 13R 6.4.7 doesn't say carports fall under the category
where residential sprinklers can be used outside dwelling units. I design
maybe 2 residential projects every year so I'm not as in tune with
residential standards as I should be. Any guidance is much appreciated.

Thank you!
