NFPA-13R (2002) 6.8.4 "Sprinklers shall not be required in any porches, balconies, corridors, and stairs that are open and attached...". I'm checking over some plans of a (3) story apartment building, on the 2nd & 3rd floor there is a hallway down the center length of the building with apartments on both sides. The plan shows sidewall heads down the length of the corridor but both ends are open to the outside, are these heads really needed? While I'm at it what about the attached balconies on the back of each unit? I guess what exactly does "open & attached..." mean?
