Thank you sir Travis, I'll call the AHJ to see what he wants for the corridors.

For the back balconies, go to the IFC and you will see it is needed if it is
Type V construction. The 2016 edition of 13R (maybe the 2013 edition) has
incorporated that.

I remember an informal interp from either AFSA or NFSA that stated with the
corridor open on both ends, then it was open and did not need sprinklers.
However, I have run into many AHJs that interpret it to mean open to sky above.
So if you look up and see structure, they want sprinklers.

NFPA-13R (2002) 6.8.4 "Sprinklers shall not be required in any porches,
balconies, corridors, and stairs that are open and attached...". I'm checking
over some plans of a (3) story apartment building, on the 2nd & 3rd floor there
is a hallway down the center length of the building with apartments on both
sides. The plan shows sidewall heads down the length of the corridor but both
ends are open to the outside, are these heads really needed? While I'm at it
what about the attached balconies on the back of each unit? I guess what
exactly does "open & attached..." mean?
