The 2013 edition of 13R deals specifically with this by reiterating what
the building code states. The 13R handbook commentary for this particular
section is a little interesting though and I've had a few go arounds with
revewiers in this regard.

It states "This rule applies to the exterior or “open” spaces accessible
only from the dwelling unit itself, and not a corridor or breezeway that is
shared among multiple dwelling units."

It goes on to talk about the need for protecting these areas based upon
grilling on the balconies etc. When you read the IBC you don't necessarily
come away thinking sprinklers are only necessary on balconies of type V
construction that only open up to the unit itself yet the NFPA handbook
does specifically call this out. Anyone have any further thoughts on this?
