Chapter 8 applies ONLY to ceiling sprinklers. There are obstruction rules for in-rack sprinklers in chapter 16 and 17. There are only three aspects: clearance above the load, distance from uprights, and clearance below the horizontal rack members. The interesting part is that when they apply is affected by the type of sprinkler, the commodity classification, the type of rack, and the height of storage. Although we have the 25 ft storage height firmly ingrained in our brains, 20 ft is the magical number for in-rack obstructions.
