I totally agree that AutoSprink makes the process much smoother. I have had a couple of files come from Mech contractors that won’t play nice with AutoSprink and I have also had issues with loading too much BIM info into AutoSrink and having it really bog down. As long as I can avoid those issues, doing the clash detection in AS is the way to go.
At the same time, I think it would benefit any designer working in BIM to be VERY comfortable using Navisworks. I know my machine would seriously choke if I tried to load all of the Arch/Struct/MEP info into AutoSprink. There are many times when me being able to see my system in the appropriate context helps me avoid issues I would not have otherwise been able to see. I don't think NAVIS will go away. That is what the coordination meetings always use. But as far as fire sprinkler design, using the clash tools in Autosprink has been far better than having to check in navis, make the change, then recheck. I just make changes on the fly in Autosprink. Often, I will be making the changes during the online meetings and then just upload a clash free model right after the meeting. The Autosprink program really is a game changer in my opinion. YES. AutoSprink all the way. I can bring in REVIT models, run clash detection, get suggested arm arounds, etc. I can export to DWG or RVT (2 step process). Best out there for 3D modeling.
