I’m having a hard time believing this is the first time I’ve heard of this in the last 15 years. I see hundreds of shop drawings that have pendent heads located in the 2x2 ceiling tile next to a diffuser.

It says “Any distance except as shown under Intermediate-Temperature Rating Column”. I have an AHJ saying that any head within 30” of a diffuser must be an Intermediate-Temperature head.
