...Yes, just a couple of letters is all. Wood construction is type V. If you have no fire-resistance protection on the wood meeting 1-hour ASMT E196 test, you have type V-B (IBC language). I am not a NY PE, so I don't know any recent reasons for the declaration, but the old reasons were:
a. declaring construction type was about at ground zero of design. b. contruction type is used to define your maximum area and height of building, along with other variables (occupancy type, setbacks, sprinklers...) You might want to take a couple hours and read the IBC chapters on Construction Types and Fire Resistance Ratings.
