The answer to your question depends on whether the wood is fire retardant
treated or coated. Treated (as in pressure treated) wood qualifies for the
omission. Coated does not.

It should be recognized that the above is my opinion as a member of the NFPA,
and has not been processed as a formal interpretation in accordance with the
NFPA Regulations Governing Committee Projects and should therefore not be
considered, nor relied upon, as the official position of the the NFPA, nor any
of their technical committees.

Sincerely,

Subject: sprinklers above mechanical platforms

Can someone please direct me? I have a metal building with acoustical
ceiling tiles. Above the ceiling they have framed with metal studs and fire
rated plywood a mezzanine for the AHU's to sit on. These are electric and
not gas fired.

For some reason I recall reading that if the AHU's are not gas fired then no
sprinkler protection is required above the area of the mezzanine.

Can someone please clarify?

Regards

Troy
