The 2018 International Building Code (IBC) has a section, 505.3.2, for automatic sprinkler coverage of equipment platforms. The definition provided in the IBC for "equipment platform" is not limited to only "fuel fired" equipment. I suspect the IBC section is here because of the tendency for out of view flat surfaces near equipment to accumulate filters and other "stuff" needed for the maintenance of the equipment.

Coated does not. I have a metal building with acoustical ceiling tiles. Above the ceiling they have framed with metal studs and fire rated plywood a mezzanine for the AHU's to sit on. These are electric and not gas fired. For some reason I recall reading that if the AHU's are not gas fired then no sprinkler protection is required above the area of the mezzanine. Can someone please clarify?
