Do they want you to add it as a 5th sprinkler? Or just replace one of the 4
operating sprinklers with the one in the closet?

Subject: [External][Sprinklerforum] Excepting closet sprinklers from calc's in
dwelling units

2022 edition of 13: We're calculating four sprinklers in a 1 BR dwelling unit
that has a sprinklered clothes closet with two sliding doors and a footprint
area of about 25 sq. ft. We've never included a sprinkler in such a small
compartment in any calc area, whether it's a residential calculation of 4 or 8
sprinklers, or applying the Room Design or Residential Sprinkler methods.
We've got a comment from a plan reviewer to include one, based on the
requirement in ?19.3.1.1, "The design area shall be the area that includes the
four adjacent sprinklers that produce the greatest hydraulic demand." Per
?28.2.4.2.7.2, we can omit these sprinklers from calcs so long as the design
area is equal to or greater than the areas specified in Table 28.2.4.7.2, which
is for area/density calculations only.

Does anyone currently or previously on 13 have an opinion on whether the
exception is intended to apply to the residential sprinkler calculation method
as well? The annex is mute, which seems to suggest that it may only be
applicable to area/density designs.
