When service is to be performed, both risers need to be shut down. Is there any code that indicates that systems cannot be tied together?" We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal interpretation is that a system can have multiple water supplies. A diagram was provided that shows two 19,000 sq. ft. gridded sprinkler systems in a building. Each system has a separate riser with a butterfly valve and flow switch. The two remote cross mains were tied together. The NFPA 13 standard does not prohibit this arrangement. Section 6.7.4.3.1 says that systems that have more than one control valve that must be closed to work on a system or space shall have a sign referring to existence and location of other valves. The annex material in A.6.7.4.3.1 further clarifies that care should be taken to ensure that all water supplies are isolated before work begins. Work on systems by shutting one valve and not knowing about another valve could result in unexpected water discharge. Thus the standard acknowledges that more than one water supply can be provided to a system. Next is Section 8.16.1.1.3.1 where there is more than one source of water supply, a check valve shall be installed in each connection. The diagram provided does not show check valves.
