Water Supply for Cooking Hood System
"I have a kitchen hood fire suppression system that cannot take a static
pressure
above 125 psi. The supplier wants to connect it to the fire sprinkler system.
The system has a fire pump that will provide 162 psi adjusted for elevation to
the
hood system. They propose installing a pressure-regulating valve on the feed.
Is this a violation of 6.1.3 and or 7.7.1.1.5 because the suppression system is
not rated for at least 175 psi?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard as well as the
2014 edition of NFPA 96. Our informal interpretation is that the water supply
can
be provided from a fire sprinkler system.
Section 10.2.9.2 of NFPA 96, Standard for Ventilation Control and Fire
Protection
of Commercial Cooking Operations, addresses this question. It says where the
water
supply is from a dedicated fire protection water supply in a building with one
or
more fire sprinkler systems, separate indicating control valves and drains shall
be provided and arranged so hat the hood system and sprinkler systems can be
controlled
individually. The manufacturers of the hood fire suppression system will have
information
on how to pipe and valve the water supply coming from the fire sprinkler system.
The installation manual for the hood fire suppression system also provides
information
on appropriate pressure reducing valves to be used to reduce the sprinkler line
supply pressure and flow rate down to the manufacturer requirements. As such,
this
is not a violation of Sections 6.1.3 and 7.7.1.1.5 of NFPA 13. Since the valve
is capable of shutting down the water flow, it can be supervised with an
electronic
switch. A pressure supervision switch can also be used to verify incoming water
pressure to the hood suppression system. NFPA 96 in Section 10.3.2.1 says that
where an automatic sprinkler system is used in conjunction with a water-based
fire-extinguishing
system served by the same water supply, hydraulic calculations shall consider
both
systems operating simultaneously. One manufacturer says the gallon per minute
is
calculated by multiplying the length of the hood by 1.5 gpm.
