Sidewall Sprinklers for Sloped Ceilings
"Are you allowed to install quick-response standard coverage sidewall sprinklers
under a sloped ceiling to spray across the slope?"
We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that the sidewall sprinkler has to be installed in the high
point
of the slope.
Section 8.7.4.2.2 requires that sidewall sprinklers installed under roof/ceiling
with a pitch greater than 2 in 12 be installed at the high point and discharge
downward. As further explained in the Handbook, the reason for this requirement
is that heat from a fire will collect at the high point. What can add to the
confusion
is Section 8.7.3.1.2 that the maximum distance between sidewall spray sprinklers
or to a wall shall be measured along the slope of the ceiling. This would
apply
for ceilings with a slope not exceeding 2 in 12 per Section 8.7.4.2.2. There is
a similar requirement for extended coverage sprinklers. The guidance is
different
for residential sidewall sprinklers where they are permitted to spray across the
slope. The manufacturer's residential sprinkler installation guides have
varying
approaches and can differ on the permitted angles of the slope. The maximum
vertical
distance down from the peak for the residential sidewall sprinklers is 3 ft per
the installation guides. There is not a similar approach for standard and
extended
coverage sidewall sprinklers. Thus, Section 8.7.4.2.2 applies.
