NFPA 13D - Architectural Features Outside the Sprinkler Listing

"The AHJ wants clarification of using listed residential sprinklers in a
residence
with a barrel ceiling in hallway and various rooms. The radius of the barrel
ceilings
range from approximately 42 in. to 12 ft. We proposed pendant sprinkler
applications
per the listed spacing. Are there any restrictions?"

We have reviewed NFPA 13, 2013 edition as the applicable standard. Our informal
interpretation is that the standard permits residential sprinklers to be used
for
a barrel shaped ceiling.

Section 8.1.3.1.2 indicates where construction features or other special
conditions
exist that are outside the scope of sprinkler listings, listed sprinklers shall
be permitted to be installed beyond their listing limitations. The Automatic
Sprinkler
Systems for Residential Occupancies Handbook has commentary that says in
situations
where no listed residential sprinklers exist for the application or arrangement
under question, NFPA 13D allows listed residential sprinklers to be installed
beyond
their listing limitations with the approval of the authority having
jurisdiction.
Residential sprinklers can be used beyond the scope of their listing, provided
the
designer develops and appropriately justifies a design and installation approach
that identifies the number of sprinklers expected to operate during a fire.
The
commentary goes on to say that since NFPA 13D mandates the use of residential
sprinklers
for the majority of areas in one- and two-family dwellings, some leniency was
provided
to help address the installation of sprinklers in the wide array of ceiling
arrangements
encountered in the field. For life safety purposes in one- and two family
dwellings,
the Committee on Residential Sprinkler Systems believes that it is more
beneficial
to use residential sprinklers beyond their listing than it is to use other types
of sprinklers. Regarding the number of sprinklers to calculate, the standard
requires
up to two design sprinklers within a compartment. There are new limitations
placed
on compartment features, depending upon the situation in Section 10.2.1. This
section
does not address a barrel shaped ceiling. As such, if one or two sprinklers
protect
compartments with barrel shaped ceilings, only the flow from those sprinklers
are
considered. If the compartment with a barrel shaped ceiling has more than two
sprinklers
and does not meet Section 10.2.1, Section 10.2.4 indicates that the number of
sprinklers
in the design area shall be determined in consultation with the authority having
jurisdiction as appropriate for the conditions.

Call for Trainers

AFSA continues to grow and evolve in response to the needs of our members. As
training
development continues, we call out to those in our membership 'family'
(contractors,
manufacturers, designers, etc.) who can serve as trainers: either as instructors
 or as content developers.

If you, or someone you know, are well versed in any (or all) of the following
areas:
installation, layout, or inspection/testing/maintenance of fire sprinkler
systems,
and want to teach or develop courses, let us hear from you!
